Lieberman: Do to Hamas what the US did to Japan

from jpost.com (Jan. 13 2009):

Operation Cast Lead must continue until Hamas "loses the will to fight," Israel Beiteinu chairman Avigdor Lieberman said on Tuesday. "Israel won't be secure so long as Hamas is in power, and therefore we need to come to a decision that we will break the will of Hamas to keep fighting," he said during a speech at Tel Aviv's Bar-Ilan University. "We must continue to fight Hamas just like the United States did with the Japanese in World War II," Lieberman added. "Then, too, the occupation of the country was unnecessary." In 1945, Japan unconditionally surrendered to the US following two atomic bomb attacks on Nagasaki and Hiroshima. A ground invasion of mainland Japan had been prepared at the time, but was avoided due to the Japanese capitulation after the bombings. Israel Beiteinu is currently the fifth largest party in Israel, and, according to an average of all polls taken since the start of the campaign season, is expected to become the fourth largest party in the next general election.

  • Lieberman: “Do to Hamas what US did to Japan” “Who is the extremist?”, Barghouthi wonders (almubadara.org, Jan. 13 2009)

“To Dr. Mustafa Barghouthi MP, The Secretary General of the Palestinian National Initiative, ‘the Israeli politicians statements disproportionate, such as their bloody actions on our people in Gaza.’

‘In 1945, US launched two atomic bomb attacks on Nagasaki and Hiroshima, resulting in one of the biggest tragedy in human history that has been condemned many times’, added the deputy.

‘Avidgor Lieberman is an extreme orator from whom we are used to hear extreme speeches. But this shows one more time that Israel never learn lesson from the past and rather invokes one of the bloodiest massacres in History to be the fate of the Gazans. They don’t have respect for human life’, he said, noting the extremely high amount of support for Israel’s war on the Gaza Strip amongst the Israeli public.

Early January, during the Israeli air strikes and previous to the ground invasion in Gaza, Israeli polls published found that 81% of Israelis supported the war in Gaza.”

Hamas has repeatedly offered a 10-year truce with Israel and has long settled for a two-state solution. When Medea Benjamin, the fearless Jewish American activist, was in Gaza, she carried a letter from Hamas leaders to President Obama that made clear the government of Gaza wanted peace with Israel. It was ignored. I personally know of many such letters carried in good faith, ignored or dismissed.
