“Anybody who believes in the Qur'an has to extract from this story [the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah] that it is unethical and immoral to engage in any type of sexual engagement with the same gender. This is something that there has been no scholarly difference of opinion. The actual act of sodomy, the act of intercourse between two men is something that without a shadow of a doubt is unanimously agreed upon as being forbidden in Islam.”

Lut known as Lot in the Old Testament, is a prophet of God in the Quran. He also appears in the Bible, but the biblical stories of Lot are not entirely accepted within Islam. He was bestowed as a prophet to the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. His story is used to demonstrate Islam's disapproval of rape and homosexuality. He was commanded by God to go to the land of Sodom and Gomorrah to preach to his people on monotheism and to stop them from their lustful and violent acts. According to both the Quran and the Hebrew Bible, Lot's messages were ignored by the inhabitants and Sodom and Gomorrah were subsequently destroyed.

Two Islamic courts in Nigeria have suspended the trials of 10 men accused of homosexuality because of fears of mob violence, AFP reported. An angry crowd last week pelted stones at seven men suspected of breaking the Islamic law banning homosexuality. Their hearing was adjourned at the Upper Sharia Court in the northern city of Bauchi. The mob were demanding a summary trial and execution for the defendants. The seven had been due to reappear before the same court on Tuesday. Nigeria banned same-sex marriage and civil unions earlier this month, a move that won widespread support in the country.

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has signed a bill prohibiting both same sex marriage and the organization of any LGBT societies, alongside a raft of other measures targeting homosexuality. The bill, which was approved by parliament last year, was signed in secret on January 7, according to documents obtained by Associated Press. Homosexual acts had already carried a sentence of 14 years behind bars in the country, and participating in same sex marriage now results in the same penalty.

When the Nazi concentration camps were liberated by the Allies, it was a time of great jubilation for the tens of thousands of people incarcerated in them. But an often forgotten fact of this time is that prisoners who happened to be wearing the pink triangle (the Nazis’ way of marking and identifying homosexuals) were forced to serve out the rest of their sentence. This was due to a part of German law simply known as “Paragraph 175” which criminalized homosexuality. The law wasn’t repealed until 1969.
