I am not Haraam

“Welcome to the home of the ‘I am not Haraam’ project - a blog created for LGBTQ Muslims by LGBTQ Muslims.

Haraam is an Arabic word used in Islam to mean ‘forbidden’. This project has been started as a way for LGBTQ Muslims to stand up and proclaim that we will not allow our existence as LGBTQ Muslims to be erased any longer.
We are not kafirs, we are not deviant, our existence is not a sin. This is our space to say:
WE ARE NOT HARAAM.”

“I'm transgender, and I lost all my Muslim friends...”

  • Anonymous Asked:

I'm transgender, and I lost all my Muslim friends when I came out. They hate me so much, and I'm drifting away from my faith. How do I keep from letting them push my away from Islam? I used to be so religious, but now, I hardly pray at all.

  • dyemelikeasunset answered:

I realize community is a big part of practicing the religion, but perhaps it’s time to re-evaluate your relationship with Islam, Allah, and most importantly, with yourself. Through pain, we reach clarity, and there is no task God sends down to us without reason.

So you haven’t prayed in a while, that’s okay. Sometimes prayers don’t have to be physical, they can be emotional, mental, idle thoughts about your spirituality. Salaat is an act of discipline, sure, but discipline isn’t always possible to maintain, especially not after suffering a blow like you have.

If you are depressed (and sadly, I’m afraid it’s very likely in your situation), don’t sacrifice your well-being by forcing yourself into routines you used to be able to do all the time. There are good days, bad days, good months, and bad years. As you get older, you will realize how easily our lives change. Take some time to transition, re-discover, re-imagine. There are no standards, because you have a fresh slate.

It may feel you are drifting away from Islam, but Allah is always with you. Maybe you’ve left one version of faith, and are on your way to find it in a new form. Whatever that may be, remember the saying:

When we pray du’aa, Allah only gives us one of three answers: “Yes,” “Not yet,” or “I have something better planned for you”

When Israel bombs Gaza, their bombs do not have a ‘gaydar’ that avoids LGBTIQ people (surprise surprise). We starve under the blockade, we die at checkpoints, we wither under occupation. We pay the price equally like our fellow non-LGBTIQs.

Dead people cannot be gay!

Police in the Russian capital have detained 10 LGBT activists after they tried to stage an unsanctioned rally at Moscow’s Red Square, Novaya Gazeta reports. The protest was timed to coincide with the opening ceremony of the Sochi Winter Games at 20:14 MSK on Friday. The activists attempted to unfold rainbow flags and sing the Russian national anthem. Two of the activists are Swedish nationals.

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has signed a bill prohibiting both same sex marriage and the organization of any LGBT societies, alongside a raft of other measures targeting homosexuality. The bill, which was approved by parliament last year, was signed in secret on January 7, according to documents obtained by Associated Press. Homosexual acts had already carried a sentence of 14 years behind bars in the country, and participating in same sex marriage now results in the same penalty.

“I am deeply saddened and shocked over the current legislation that is now in place against the LGBT community here in Russia. In my opinion, it is inhumane and it is isolating. Some people have demanded that because of this legislation, I must not come here to Russia. But many, many more people asked me to come and I listened to them. I love coming here.

I want to show them and the world that I care and that I don’t believe in isolating people. Music is a very powerful thing. It brings people together irrespective of their age, their race, their sexuality, or their religion. It does not discriminate. Look around you tonight. You see men, women, young and old, gay and straight. Thousands of happy Russian people enjoying the music. We’re all here together in harmony, and harmony is what makes a happy family and a strong society.”

International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge has asked Moscow for clarification on how Russia’s controversial ‘gay propaganda’ legislation might affect athletes and spectators at the Sochi 2014 Olympics. Rogge said Friday that ‘uncertainties’ still remain, and the IOC will present its official stance after such a clarification. Rogge confirmed however that the IOC has received ‘all assurances’ from Russian Olympic supervisor Dmitry Kozak that Sochi athletes and visitors will be exempt from the law, RIA Novosti said. The law levies stiff fines for individuals or organizations who promote homosexuality to minors.

‘Let me say this loud and clear: lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people are entitled to the same rights as everyone else. They, too, are born free and equal,’ Mr. Ban said at a special event on the need for leadership in the fight against homophobia, held at UN Headquarters in New York. ‘It is an outrage that in our modern world, so many countries continue to criminalize people simply for loving another human being of the same sex. In most cases, these laws are not home-grown. They were inherited from former colonial powers,’ he added, noting that ‘these laws must go.’ ...Speaking from her experiences as a South African woman born under apartheid, Ms. [Yvonne] Chaka Chaka [musician, singer and campaigner] said that the fight against homophobia was no different from the fights against racism and sexism. ‘The struggle for equality is not a la carte. You can’t just accept equality for some but then withhold it from others because you disagree with them or you disapprove of them. Equality is equality for all or it isn’t equality at all,’ she said, in addition to calling for more celebrities to take a stand against homophobia.
