Breaking The Media Blackout on the Imprisonment of Julian Assange

8710_6759_300

«It is important to ask ourselves what Julian Assange’s real crime is. In an era, dubbed the Information Age, where the strategy of the powerful appears to be to know as much as possible about the rest of us while ensuring that we know as little as possible about them and how they operate, Assange worked to prevent that imbalance from becoming a rout, and stuck like a bone in the throat of the mighty.

A double chorus of voices across the mainstream media spectrum cheered the destruction of the First Amendment. The New York Times applauded Trump, claiming he’d “done well” to charge Assange with an “indisputable crime.” CNN demanded that Assange finally “face justice,” while others claimed the day in court of the “narcissistic” “internet troll” who attacked America with his “vile spite” was “long overdue.”

All around the world, Assange’s treatment seems to have given the green light to governments to intimidate and hassle journalists. Australian police, for instance, recently conducted a raid on journalist Annika Smethurst’s home. Smethurst had not long before that revealed that the government had been secretly requesting permission to spy on its own citizens. Meanwhile, independent media everywhere are being marginalized by the crackdown on internet freedom.

In a clear sign to the world, Assange held up Gore Vidal’s book The History of the National Security State to the cameras while being dragged from the Ecuadorian Embassy. The book warns of an increasingly powerful and unaccountable authoritarian government taking over the country. Part of that is silencing dissent and limiting or destroying the freedoms centuries of struggle have won us.

If Assange is successfully prosecuted it will send a message to the world that the era of freedom to speak and publish is well and truly over. He will not be the last to be persecuted. The more a power oppresses and takes away rights, the more it needs to oppress and take away rights, until the last vestiges of opposition are destroyed or driven far underground. We cannot expect corporate media to stand up to the corporate state. We have to do it ourselves, or any citizen of the world can be next. Will you heed this warning?»

China Claims US Behind Hong Kong Protests

October 12, 2014

«Although China has strongly implied that foreigners were secretly controlling the Hong Kong protests in recent weeks, the [People’s Daily] commentary was the first time it so explicitly accused the U.S. of being behind the movement. Its support for this accusation is not very compelling, however, as it mostly focuses on the coverage of independent different media outlets, one of which appears to be a Hong Kong-based online publication.

The commentary begins by noting that, “according to media reports,” Louisa Greve, National Endowment for Democracy’s (NED) the Vice President for Asia, Middle East & North Africa, and Global Programs, met with “key people” in Occupy Central “several months ago” to “talk about the movement.” The unidentified media reports the article references likely refers to an earlier report published in a “Hong Kong-based pro-Beijing newspaper,” according to the Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post. The allegations themselves are most likely based on a NED-hosted public discussion on democracy in Hong Kong between Occupy Central leaders Martin Lee and Anson Chan that was held in Washington, DC in April of this year. Louisa Greve mediated the hour long talk, a video of which is available on YouTube.

The National Endowment for Democracy is a democracy promotion organization that, while administered as a private non-profit organization, receives the bulk of its funding from the U.S. government. In 2013 it gave two grants that together totaled less than $300,000 to two organizations for work on Hong Kong. Only one of those organizations is based in Hong Kong.

However, the National Democratic Institute (NDI), a subsidiary of the NED, does maintain a tiny office in Hong Kong. The Diplomat has learned that NDI’s Hong Kong office typically employs one international staff member and occasionally hires one or two locals to help out when needed. Most of NDI’s work in Hong Kong focuses on holding workshops attended by young leaders from all interested political parties that focus on building skills in areas like public speaking, campaign strategy, message development and message delivery. The Diplomat has learned that NDI has regularly worked with pro-Beijing political parties in Hong Kong who, like all political parties, hope to prevail in local elections. Local Hong Kong press have occasionally accused NDI of being a front for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in the past.

Beyond NED, the People’s Daily article notes that three former U.S. Consuls General to Hong Kong had “recently united” to write an open letter to Hong Kong Chief Executive CY Leung.

Most of the People’s Daily’s claim that the U.S. is trying to foment a color revolution in Hong Kong, however, is based on mainstream newspapers using the term “Umbrella Revolution” in their coverage of the Hong Kong protests. For example, it notes that the Associated Press and Wall Street Journal had used the term “Umbrella Revolution” in their Hong Kong coverage. Neither organization is affiliated with the U.S. government.»

US Says Assad Has Approved Gas Attack In Idlib, Setting Stage For Major Military Conflict

“The Wall Street Journal has just published a bombshell on Sunday evening as Russian and Syrian warplanes continue bombing raids over al-Qaeda held Idlib, citing unnamed US officials who claim “President Bashar al-Assad of Syria has approved the use of chlorine gas in an offensive against the country’s last major rebel stronghold.”

And perhaps more alarming is that the report details that Trump is undecided over whether new retaliatory strikes could entail expanding the attack to hit Assad allies Russia and Iran this time around.”

Japan general elections 2017 - too fishy polls.

DLn6fhxUEAAW7ka
@ShingetsuNews: Yomiuri poll is all good news for PM Abe: threat from Party of Hope fading and CDPJ gains only marginal support.

DLxn0IZVAAITp2A
@ShingetsuNews: If NHK has it right, the Party of Hope has collapsed to former Democratic Party levels of support, and PM Abe's LDP heading for landslide.

DMADJwJUEAAxMgX
@ShingetsuNews: Opposition parties all receive miserable support ratings in latest Jiji poll, with CDPJ (leader) more-or-less in line with Hope & Communists

Too fishy - yes I think so - given people’s criticism against PM Abe prevalent in social media. Former LDP politician Katsuhiko Shirakawa (白川勝彦) also raises doubt, in his latest blog post, about Japanese MSM’s extraordinary election coverage that strongly suggests LDP’s landslide victory. He says we may see surprising results in the upcoming Oct. 22 elections. Don’t be fooled by manipulation!

こうなったら全部チャラにしてしまえ!

from liberal-shirakawa.net (2017年10月13日):

New details about Moritomo land sale emerge - News - NHK WORLD - English

Moritomo land sale scandal - allegation that the Abe government sold state-owned land in Osaka to the Moritomo Gakuen school corporation deliberately at an illegally huge discount. If the allegation were a fact, the officials who took part in the negotiations would be held accountable for malfeasance under Japan’s criminal law. Many people in Japan heard yesterday’s NHK revelation, which suggests an extraordinary discount was done on government’s initiative, and became convinced that wrongdoing by the officials is unquestionable.

Yasunori Kagoike, former president of Moritomo Gakuen, is an admirer of PM Abe; in addition, Abe’s wife Akie was once given the status of honorary headmaster of the elementary school that Moritomo built on the land bought from the government. Though PM Abe denies any wrongdoing, people have a strong suspicion that Abe and his wife are behind the incident.

Recently the Abe administration appointed Nobuhisa Sagawa, the Finance Ministry bureaucrat who defended the government from the Moritomo allegation with his testimony before the Diet, as chief of the National Tax Agency. This move triggered public anger - Abe rewarded a subservient official with higher position!
