i12bent: On Aug. 4, 1936 Jesse Owens won the long jump gold at the Berlin Olympics. He beat German athlete Luz Long (whose sportsmanship stretched so far as to give Owens a good tip after Owens had had two foul jumps) and Japanese athlete Naoto Tajima… This image of Owens giving his flag a military salute and Luz Long heil'ing his Führer has become the iconic image of the ‘Nazi’ Olympics.

i12bent: Upon Jesse Owens return to the US he was given a New York ticker tape parade. However, President Roosevelt never sent him a telegram congratulating him, nor did he invite the athlete to the White House. America being a segregated society Jesse Owens also had to use the freight elevator at the Waldorf-Astoria to get to the reception held in his honour…

Israeli company loses 2016 Rio Olympics’ security contract it had claimed to have been awarded | BDSmovement.net

“More than 30 Brazilian social movements and progressive organisations had called on the Brazilian government to exclude International Security and Defence Systems from Olympics contracts after the Israeli company announced in October 2014 that it had been awarded a $2.2bn deal to coordinate security at the games.

On April 8, the Ministry of Justice’s Special Secretariat for Mega-events (Sesge/MJ) replied to their letter by explaining that ISDS has not been awarded any contracts.

The reply from Sesge/MJ also stated that ‘any contract made by Rio 2016 won’t result in compromises by the Brazilian government’, a phrase campaigners are interpreting as a clear sign that government officials were sympathetic to their demands.

ISDS had originally announced it had been awarded a contract by the Organising Committee for the 2016 Games. When overall responsibility for security at the games shifted to the Brazilian government, Brazilian social movements began calling on the Brazilian government to ensure that the apparent deal would not remain in place.

The letter to key Sesge/MJ official Andrei Rodrigues signed by Brazilian social movements, political parties, workers unions, and different associations set out how ISDS is accused of having ties to coups, death squares and dictatorships in Central America, as well as close links with the Israeli military.

Campaigners are now preparing to pressure the Olympics Committee to cancel a separate ‘official supplier’ deal with ISDS.

Jaman Juma, coordinador of the Stop the Wall movement, said:

‘For us, boycotting this company is paradigmatic: Israel develops its methodologies and technologies through the killing and repression of the Palestinian people, and then it sells them worldwide. The end of military and security relations with Israel is an act of defense. Not only for the Palestinian people, it is an act of defense for humanity.’

Julio Turra, executive director of the biggest Brazilian workers’ union, CUT, one of the signatories of the letter to Coesrio2016, said:

‘We are glad with the information the government distances itself from ISDS. It would be illegal and shameful to hire a company that develops its technologies in complicity with Israeli crimes and that accumulates complaints about its participation in Central American dictatorships.’

Mahmoud Nawajaa, General Coordinador of the BDS Palestinian National Committee (BNC), said:

‘We welcome the fact that the Brazilian government categorically states it has no commercial relation with ISDS. We expect that no similar company will be hired. It is important that Brazil walks towards a fully military embargo against Israel’.

‘Brazilians can be sure they will have the support from the Palestinian and international civil society on this campaign against ISDS in the Olympic Games’.”

Outrage in Japan at French cartoon linking Fukushima disaster to 2020 Olympics (RT News, Sep. 12 2013)

One of the cartoons carried in the [French] satirical newspaper [Le Canard Enchaine] on Wednesday showed two sumo wrestlers with extra legs and arms competing in front of the crippled nuclear plant with a sign reading "Marvelous! Thanks to Fukushima, sumo is now an Olympic sport."

Another cartoon showed people in protective costumes conducting radiation tests by the side of a pool saying "There is already a pool in Fukushima for the Olympics."

"It is inappropriate and gives a wrong impression of the Fukushima contaminated water issue. It is extremely regrettable," the Japanese government spokesman said.

Tokyo won the right to host the 2020 Olympics on Saturday, beating Madrid and Istanbul, despite the issues concerning the level of contamination at the crippled nuclear plant some 230 kilometers north of the capital.

The Japanese Prime minister has reassured the International Olympic Committee that the situation was "under control" and that he would be personally responsible for a plan to cope with the consequences.

According to recent revelations, the tritium level in groundwater near the wrecked plant has soared more than 15 times in just three days, the Fukushima operator Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) admitted on Thursday. In August the operator reported that 300 tons of highly radioactive groundwater was leaking into the Pacific Ocean daily. In a study published in the August edition of journal Deep-Sea Research 1 scientists predicted that the contaminated plume of water will likely reach US coastal waters in early 2014. Meanwhile, South Korean regulators have already banned the import of 50 fishery products from eight Japanese prefectures.

The publishing of the cartoons comes amid rising concerns about the situation at the crippled plant.

Japanese freelance reporter Ryūsaku Tanaka (田中龍作) tweeted:

Tokyo's been chosen as 2020 Olympic host. Media hype will continue for the coming seven years. Verious problems caused by the nuclear accident, such as contaminated water leak, or health damage resulting from [radiation] exposure, will be hidden; everything inconvenient will be done so, including poverty and karōshi.

The decision means Tokyo will become the first Asian city to host the Games twice. They had previously been awarded the event in 1940, but the Games were cancelled because of World War II.

Tokyo to host 2020 summer Olympics (RT News, Sep. 7 2013)

It seems to me the IOC made a rather foolish choice. After seven years, how heavily will Tokyo have been contaminated with Fukushima radiation... nobody knows. Athletes should join the games at their own risk.

Istanbul, Tokyo and Madrid battle it out in Buenos Aires to decide who will host the 2020 Olympics and Paralympics.

“On September 7, International Olympic Committee (IOC) members will gather in Buenos Aires, Argentina to choose between Tokyo, Istanbul and Madrid to host the 2020 Summer Olympic Games.

Ahead of the vote, Tsunekazu Takeda, the president of the Japanese Olympic Committee addressed the IOC with a letter, saying that ‘Life [in Tokyo], for all 35 million residents, is completely normal and safe and we do not foresee any change to that.’

‘The city's air and water are monitored daily and there remains no evidence at all of any issue, as confirmed by the Japanese government,’ the text reads, as cited by Associated Press.”

Fukushima leaks won’t be threat to Tokyo Olympics – bid leader (RT News, Sep. 3 2013)

A comment on the above report:

These people are CRAZY to think that the Olympics can be held in Tokyo!! HECK NO!! This plant is still out of control! Japan has NO BUSINESS to hold ANY sort of special event! I would'nt go 5,000 miles near Japan right now!

And in Novemeber 2013 the spent fuel rods from the cooling pool will start to be removed, ONE slight problem in this process and the entire plant facility can make the whole country and probably the northern hemisphere un liveable!! Good luck to Japan!!

International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge has asked Moscow for clarification on how Russia’s controversial ‘gay propaganda’ legislation might affect athletes and spectators at the Sochi 2014 Olympics. Rogge said Friday that ‘uncertainties’ still remain, and the IOC will present its official stance after such a clarification. Rogge confirmed however that the IOC has received ‘all assurances’ from Russian Olympic supervisor Dmitry Kozak that Sochi athletes and visitors will be exempt from the law, RIA Novosti said. The law levies stiff fines for individuals or organizations who promote homosexuality to minors.
