A Pakistani court has rejected the appeal of Asia Bibi, a mother of five, who was convicted of blasphemy for insulting Islam’s Prophet Mohammed in 2010, the Associated Press reports. Her case led to the assassination of two politicians who supported her and spoke out against blasphemy laws in Pakistan. Bibi was arrested following a verbal spat with a Muslim woman who claimed Bibi had made ‘derogatory remarks’ about the prophet. Her lawyer told the Associated Press, that they would continue the appeals process. ‘We have a strong case and we will try our best to save her life,’ he said. Though many are sentenced to death for blasphemy, Pakistan has never executed anyone for the offense.

An outbreak of polio that has already paralyzed 13 children in Syria originated in Pakistan, the World Health Organization confirmed on Monday.

‘Genetic sequencing indicates that the isolated viruses are most closely linked to a virus detected in environmental samples in Egypt in December 2012, which in turn had been linked to wild poliovirus circulating in Pakistan,’ says the UN health agency.

The United Nations has already launched a large-scale campaign to vaccinate more than 20 million children in the Middle East, including 1.6 million in Syria. This disease mainly affects children under five and cannot be cured, only prevented.

However, the current situation in Syria with numerous clashes between government forces and the opposition may hamper vaccination procedures aimed at stopping the spread of the virus, says the WHO.

Now I prefer cloudy days when the drones don’t fly. When the sky brightens and becomes blue, the drones return and so does the fear. Children don’t play so often now, and have stopped going to school. Education isn’t possible as long as the drones circle overhead.

13-year-old Pakistani boy, Zubair, who lost his grandmother in a US drone strike.

A little reminder to we’re-progressive-you’re-not Americans.
