micdotcom [Jun. 9 2015]: On Monday, U.S. district judge James Brady granted 68-year-old Albert Woodfox his freedom and took the additional step of barring him from standing trial again in connection to his alleged role in the 1972 murder of a prison guard. Woodfox had been awaiting another trial around the tragic circumstances that led to his confinement.

The United Nations has previously called on all states to ban solitary confinement for periods longer than 15 days. But according to the U.S. based advocacy website Solitary Watch, there are currently some 25,000 individuals being held in long-term isolation in the nation’s ‘supermax’ facilities.

“A diet of bread and water is the punishment for dozens of Arizona inmates who allegedly defaced American flags placed in their jail cells.

The 38 male inmates are part of the Maricopa County jail system, which is under the control of controversial sheriff Joe Arpaio.

For their alleged unpatriotic acts, the sheriff said Thursday, they’ll survive on bread and water for seven days.

‘These inmates have destroyed the American flag that was placed in their cells,’ Arpaio said. ‘Tearing them, writing on them, stepping on them, throwing them in the toilet, trash or wherever they feel. It’s a disgrace … this is government property that they are destroying, and we will take action against those who act this way.’

The flags are part of a push for patriotism in county jail cells that includes listening to the ‘Star-Spangled Banner’ every morning and ‘God Bless America’ every night over the intercom system.

Arpaio implemented the American flag jailhouse initiative in November.”

If this kind of abuse is allowed, US can’t criticize China’s patriotic education.

More than 450 jailed Muslim Brotherhood members have launched a hunger strike over their ‘inhuman treatment’ by the Egyptian prison system, Lebanese website Naharnet reports. The prisoners have been ‘banned from family visits, legal counseling, medical care and (live in) overcrowded and unhygienic cells,’ the organization said on its twitter page.

Prisons do not disappear social problems, they disappear human beings. Homelessness, unemployment, drug addiction, mental illness, and illiteracy are only a few of the problems that disappear from public view when the human beings contending with them are relegated to cages.

Inmate population is expanding at one of North Korea's largest political prison camps, Amnesty International said Thursday, citing satellite images. The report by the rights watchdog detailing rape and torture included testimony from a former camp guard, as well as from former inmates, AFP said. The images of Camp 15 in the south of the country and Camp 16 in the north analyzed in the Amnesty report were taken from 2011 to 2013. North Korea denies the existence of the political prison camps, while, according to independent estimates, they are holding between 100,000 and 200,000 people.
