Office of Germany’s chancellor knew of NSA espionage: Report

“Citing intelligence agency documents, the German Bild Daily said on Monday that the US National Security Agency (NSA) sought to spy on European firms through the monitoring station of Berlin’s BND foreign intelligence agency at Bad Aibling in southern Bavaria.
The NSA reportedly attempted to spy on phone numbers and e-mail addresses at the European Aeronautic Defense and Space Company (EADS), which is now known as Airbus, and Eurocopter, now called Airbus Helicopters.
The German daily said it had seen two documents sent by the BND to the chancellery dating back to 2008 and 2010, informing it of the NSA activities.
Citing an unnamed source from the German parliamentary committee on the US spying agency, Bild said Berlin chose to remain silent and close its eyes to the information in order to avoid ‘endangering cooperation’ with Washington and the NSA.
Last week, German news weekly Spiegel said Germany had helped the NSA spy on European companies for years. The report added that the NSA had provided the BND with mail addresses and mobile phone numbers, later to be monitored by Berlin on behalf of Washington.”

Snowden: UK spied on Argentina over Falklands

“The documents obtained by The Intercept and Argentinian news website Todo Noticias say that a unit of the British spy agency Government Communications Headquarters, the Joint Threat Research and Intelligence Group, has been involved in ‘Operation QUITO’ in Argentina from at least 2009 until 2011.
It was allegedly tasked ‘to support Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s goals relating to Argentina and the Falkland Islands’ in order to ‘prevent Argentina from taking over the Falkland Islands.’
The Intercept suggests that the unit could have been using ‘false flag’ operations and computer viruses to collect intelligence, spread propaganda and discredit opponents.”

One document lists 38 embassies and missions, describing them as ‘targets’. It details an extraordinary range of spying methods used against each target, from bugs implanted in electronic communications gear to taps into cables to the collection of transmissions with specialised antennae. Along with traditional ideological adversaries and sensitive Middle Eastern countries, the list of targets includes the EU missions and the French, Italian and Greek embassies, as well as a number of other American allies, including Japan, Mexico, South Korea, India and Turkey. The list in the September 2010 document does not mention the UK, Germany or other western European states.
