Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said he supported some aspects of the Islamic Republic’s diplomatic efforts at the United Nations General Assembly in New York last week, but some of what transpired was ‘not fitting,’ ISNA news agency reported. Khamenei did not elaborate on what aspects of the diplomatic push he found disagreeable. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, a relative moderate who has attempted a diplomatic thaw with the West, spoke last week by telephone with US President Barack Obama in the highest-level contact between the two countries since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
