Former NSA contractor and whistleblower Edward Snowden has agreed to take part as a candidate in the election for Student Rector at Glasgow University. The university’s Edward Snowden for Rector campaign said in a statement that his candidacy is a ‘unique opportunity to show our gratitude to a brave whistleblower.’ The ‘informal group of [Glasgow University] students’ praised Snowden’s stated motives for revealing the clandestine global surveillance activities of the US National Security Agency, saying he acted with the ‘sole aim of informing his fellow citizens of state criminality.’ The campaign said they contacted Snowden through ‘interlocutors’ from the university to Snowden in Russia, where he is currently living in an undisclosed location under temporary asylum. The group called on all students ‘committed to ending state intrusion into our private lives’ to declare support for Snowden’s candidacy. Snowden is among four official candidates for the three-year post.
