  • @BarackObama: Just 16, @GretaThunberg is already one of our planet’s greatest advocates. Recognizing that her generation will bear the brunt of climate change, she’s unafraid to push for real action. She embodies our vision at the @ObamaFoundation: A future shaped by young leaders like her.

  • @sahouraxo: If Obama really cared about our planet, he wouldn’t have dropped white phosphorus, depleted uranium and other toxic chemical munitions on Afghanistan, Iraq, Gaza, Libya, Syria and Yemen.

‘US grills inmates in secret UAE-run jails in Yemen’

“The Associated Press documented at least 18 secret jails across southern Yemen run by the UAE or by Yemeni militia loyal to the former Yemeni government, where prisoners face extreme abuse and torture on a routine basis.

On Wednesday, senior US defense officials confirmed that the American forces have been involved in interrogations of detainees in Yemen but denied any participation in or knowledge of human rights violations.

Several torturing methods are being used at the jails, including the ‘grill’ in which the victim is tied to a spit like a roast and spins in a circle of fire, according to the report.

Former inmates released from one main detention facility at Riyan airport in the southern city of Mukalla, said they were crammed into shipping containers covered with feces and blindfolded for weeks. They said they were beaten, trussed up on the ‘grill,’ and sexually abused.

‘The entire place is gripped by fear. Almost everyone is sick, the rest are near death. Anyone who complains heads directly to the torture chamber,’ said a former detainee held for six months at Riyan airport.

So far, over 400 men have disappeared after being swept up in Mukalla.

The UAE secret jail network in Yemen was established during former US president Barack Obama’s administration and still continues its operations, according to the report.”

There is no $110 billion deal. Instead, there are a bunch of letters of interest or intent, but not contracts. Many are offers that the defense industry thinks the Saudis will be interested in someday. So far nothing has been notified to the Senate for review. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency, the arms sales wing of the Pentagon, calls them “intended sales.” None of the deals identified so far are new, all began in the Obama administration.

“Obama warned that inaction to extend key Patriot Act provisions, which can extend the [NSA spying] program for two months, could hinder counterterrorism efforts by the NSA.

He said that there are only a ‘handful of senators’ who are blocking the extension of those provisions.

Section 215 of the Patriot Act allows the NSA to collect any telephone and business records relevant to a counterterrorism investigation.

The section, which expires at midnight on May 31, was rejected by the Senate on May 23. The vote was 45-54, which fell short of the 60-vote threshold.

‘I don't want us to be in a situation in which for a certain period of time those authorities go away, and suddenly we're dark,’ Obama said.

‘Heaven forbid we've got a problem where we could have prevented a terrorist attack or apprehended someone who is engaged in dangerous activity, but we didn't do so simply because of inaction in the Senate,’ the US president added.”

Baltimore: what needs to be talked about

by Mary Scully (via momo33me.tumblr.com):

There is a concerted media campaign to turn the discussion about Baltimore into moralizing about the looting, arson, vandalism even though there is precious little evidence it is widespread. Allegedly, a senior community center, pharmacy, wig store, & convenience store were torched by protesters. Maybe the protesters torched all four; maybe they didn’t.

Obama made a statement about Baltimore that echoed what he said about Ferguson. As forcefully as one can in a monotone, he condemned the riots in Baltimore & called those involved “criminals & thugs.” In Ferguson he said “I don’t have any sympathy for protesters burning buildings.” So now we know where he stands on that question. Where does he stand on police violence that provoked the outrage? What does he think about suspending the Bill of Rights in Ferguson & Baltimore? On that he’s remained dumb as a stump. What does he have to say about the hundreds of Black kids murdered every year by cops?

In September 2014, the Baltimore Sun newspaper reported on their six-month investigation of police misconduct in the city. They reported the city of Baltimore paid out about $5.7 million since 2011 from lawsuits claiming police brutality & civil rights violations with alleged suspects. That’s not counting another $5.8 million spent by the city on legal fees to defend the accused cops. The newspaper found a “disturbing pattern” of such conduct. Over 100 people had won court judgements or settlements in a period of less than four years & the victims ranged from a 15-year-old boy to a 65 year-old church deacon & an 87 year-old woman helping her wounded grandson. That’s what needs to be talked about–not stealing toilet paper from a chain pharmacy.

Fox News is reporting that a data mining firm (which shared its findings exclusively with them) analyzed social media interactions in Baltimore & found 20 to 50 social media accounts were used to provoke & organize violence in both Baltimore & Ferguson. Fox reports “While further analysis is being conducted on the data, it suggests the presence of "professional protesters” or anarchists taking advantage of Freddie Gray’s death to incite more violence.” The old “outside agitator” claim they used not just against civil rights activists who went to Ferguson to stand with the Black community but against activists who participated in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. On the face of it, it’s farcical but it’s a serious charge since crap like that can be used to censor social media & prosecute those who defend the Black community on social media.

The discussion of those who stand with civil rights & Black power should not be controlled by media or Obama’s turgid rhetoric but by justice & the Bill of Rights. When they talk about the pharmacy, we talk about Freddie Gray. And we stand with the protesters in Baltimore without reciting the mantra “I’m opposed to rioting, but…!”

Obama to Visit Baltimore … When Protests End | News | teleSUR English

“‘Once things have cleared up, I think there’s going be a time when I go back to Baltimore City,’ he said during a radio interview aired on the ‘The Steve Harvey Morning Show.’

Obama has previously come under fire from critics for not visiting other cities during the height of similar protests in the past year, such as Ferguson, Missouri, where his absence from slain teenager Michael Brown’s funeral was noted. The president argued he hadn't organized visits to allow ‘law enforcement or emergency responders do their work.’

However, during Wednesday's interview Obama conceded ‘police related killings or deaths,’ which have sparked protests, have taken place ‘too often.’

‘Everybody is starting to recognize that this is not just an isolated incident in Ferguson or New York, but we’ve got some broader issues,’ he said.”

Google-White House Meetings Reveal Deep Links | News | teleSUR

“The documents reviewed by the newspaper [Wall Street Journal] show that, since the beginning of the Obama administration, Google executives have visited the White House about 230 times, which on average account for one meeting per week.

‘We think it is important to have a strong voice in the debate and help policy makers understand our business and the work we do to keep the Internet open, to build great products, and to fuel economic growth,’ said Google spokeswoman Niki Christoff to WSJ.

The number of visits made by the Internet giant contrasts with similar companies. For example, Comcast Corp. representatives, the biggest cable TV provider in the U.S., have visited the White House only 20 times since Obama took office.

The revelations seem to confirm the links between Google and the U.S. government, denounced by WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in his book ‘When Google Met WikiLeaks’ published last year.

According to Assange, Google works closely with the Department of State, the National Security Agency and the White House in order to promote U.S. foreign policy and regime change in hostile countries. He added Google and the Deparment of State have revolving doors.”

One Year Later, Obama Failing on Promise to Rein in NSA | Electronic Frontier Foundation

“President Obama still has time in office to make this right, and he’s got ample power to rein in NSA overreach without Congress lifting a finger. But if he continues to offer these weak reforms, then he should be prepared for a major Congressional battle when sections of the Patriot Act come up for reauthorization in June.”
